uh... favorite place?

I can't say I have a favorite place in the world, but I do have many places that hold fond memories and that I often want to go back to. Mount Hood, which is a couple hours north of Portland Oregon, is a beautiful mountain with numerous places to ski or snowboard. I can't say it has the best snowboarding in the United States, but my uncle lives in Portland and taught me a lot of what I know on Mount Hood, so many of my fondest snowboarding memories were created here.

Not only does the mountain provide a wonderful foundation for winter sports, but after spending some time there I have come to find it holds a number of quirks. Near the base of the mountain is a small town called Government Camp (or Govie if you're a local... or a local's nephew.) This quaint little town has insanely good food if you know where to look. Between two equipment rental shops is the smallest burrito shack I've ever seen, but it makes up for its lack of seating with a massive delicious burrito that can pack a punch if you want it to. The real treasure of Government Camp is the huckleberry milkshakes at the Huckleberry Inn. After working in a frozen custard shop for 3 years, I hold myself to being an ice cream snob, and I can honestly say the huckleberry milkshakes at the huckleberry in are the best shakes I've ever had.

At the top of mount Hood is the Timberline Lodge. This hotel was used as the exterior shots for filming the Shining, (the interior shots were done at a much creepier hotel.) Although the outside looks pretty creepy at night, it is ultimately a beautiful building inside and out, and they allow non-guests to spend time in the lobby and roaming around the interior. Inside the main lobby is a little restaurant that is insanely overpriced, but serves luxurious fondue exclusively in bread bowls. The tomato soup is also quite pleasant.

Although the mountain is excellent for snowboarding, the little experiences off the slopes are what make Mount Hood a special place to me.

  1. Oh, I know Mount Hood, Nate! We lived in Eugene when I was little, and my father was a fan of visiting both mountains and beaches when we lived in Oregon. Such great pictures! Maybe you can learn about some of the trekking destinations in the mountains of India and use that as a backdrop to your project for class; mountains are a big thing in India, both literally and figuratively! Google can help you to trek virtually, learning about these beautiful if faraway places: Indiahikes Trekking for example...

  2. Nate, these are such great pictures of the mountains. I have never visited Mount Hood, or Oregon for that matter, but you did a great job describing the area. I definitely want to visit and try out those fondue bread bowls and tomato soup, it sounds so good on a cold day like today. Best of luck to you this semester!
