After the birth of Krishna, Kansa is haunted by nightmares. He quickly discovers that Devaki had given birth to the prophesied 8th child, but he saw in his dungeons that the child was a girl. He laughed, thinking that no girl could kill him. Nonetheless, he swore to kill the child. He cursed the gods and demanded they answer how a girl could kill him. Then he moved to kill the child, but the child burst in light. Once his blindness faded, Kansa found him face to face with the warrior goddess Durga. Durga told Kansa that he was foolish to think women weak. She threatened that she had killed many demons that were much more powerful than Kansa, but that his fate was already sealed; he would die by the hands of Krishna. She told him finally that the baby had escaped, and that one day Krishna would come for Kansa and fulfill both their fates. Then she disappeared.
